SERVICES

What should I do if I have side effects from a flu shot?

If you suspect that you are suffering side effects or other injury from a flu shot or other injection, you should seek an in-person appointment with your doctor, primary care provider or other appropriate medical specialist immediately.

Asking the right questions when you visit can significantly impact how fast you get the right diagnosis and treatment. This can seriously impact how quickly you recover and your ability to seek compensation under the national vaccine injury compensation program.

Injections, including flu shots, may injure a person if they are injected improperly.

A flu shot should be injected into the shoulder muscle — the deltoid.

If a vaccine is injected too high, it can go into the shoulder joint. Injecting too low or too far to the side, it can go into the shoulder nerves. Injecting too deep can hit the bone. Any of these could injure the vaccine recipient.

To properly administer a shoulder vaccine injection, the person giving the shot should be sitting. The person receiving the shot should fully roll up their sleeve, fully exposing the top of their shoulder. And the administrator should apply a “three finger test” to make sure the injection is three finger widths down from the top of the shoulder. Shoulder injuries often occur when the administrator is in a hurry and just “eyeballs” the injection site.

What vaccines can cause shoulder adverse reactions?
